Circles of Solitude. Painting and Sculpture by Rob Ward
Sculpture concerns itself with creating new objects for the imagination. My work has revolved around making objects from a collection of things and ideas which when pushed together make new objects in the world. This collection ranges from Tools , utensils and the everyday items that punctuate our lives. Things we use. Things we love either for their function shape or colour. I place these using a diverse range of methods, processes and techniques, casting, carving and construction to act in harmony and create situations to make meaning.
The subjects of the work are varied, landscapes, architecture, poetry, and music. This exhibition is taken from my archive of things . The paintings are from photographs on my studio shelves without composition. The sculpture derives from these objects, reorganised into small works which play with scale.
The idea for the exhibition came from a poem by the poet Rilke who wrote widely about the sculptor Rodin. In the poem he writes about the sculptor’s plinth being his circle of solitude. The place where he thinks and contemplates his work. To this end all the sculptures are contained within different circles and explore form, colour, texture, material and scale within the parameters of a circle. They are circles of solitude for reflection, meditation and imagination.
